Throughout the icy winter the tension mounts, but warming weather will bring the great mammoth hunt and the mating rituals of the Summer Meeting, when Ayla must choose to remain with Ranec and the Mamutoi, or to The intense insecurity that Jondalar displays when Ayla has sex with Ranec (which, due to her cultural upbringing, she thought she had to do) is extremely unattractive. Ranec had stalker potential from the moment he appeared, and he bears it out as the book goes on. When we last left Ayla and Jondalar, they were returning to Jondalar's family, standing smiling as they met one of the Mamutoi. Now, Ayla is quivering in fear, afraid that this Other is going to see her and immediately know, somehow, that she lived with the Clan and hate her (this is only 1 of the many continuity conflicts in this story).

Ook Jondalar is nog steeds verliefd op Ayla, maar kan dit haar niet vertellen. Uiteindelijk, op de dag voor de verbintenis met Ranec, komt het toch goed tussen Ayla en Jondalar en vertrekken ze samen op weg naar het volk van Jondalar. Tijdens deze reis komt Ayla erachter dat niet alle mensen het beste met hen voor hebben. Ayla struggles to fit in and to overcome her early conditioning. Jondalar has to learn to let her go and not restrict her. Many readers didn't like this book because they said it was too much like a soap opera,with the love triangle between Ranec Jondalar and Ayla.I agree the misunderstanding and suspence made me feel like screaming.

Att det skulle kännas så befriande att se Ayla i pudelrockshår och blod i ansiktet och i en senare del av serien en lika välutrustad brunett (Ranec). Turteatern har tagit några steg längre och helt raderat Jondalar ur manus. Ayla dras till Ranec mot sin vilja.

I didn't enjoy that and I thought it I love the Earth's Children's Series by Jean Auel. I will say that the last 2 books were disappointing and the 4th book was what started that going down point. Fromax: Ayla har flyttat till Kalbo, Iza till Oxelösund, Ranec till Sockholm/Enksede och Zolena till Laxå. Durc kommer flytta till Pajala och Jondalar flyttar till Stavsjö.
